TOPIC: Improve Your Safety Swing: Safety Tips From A “Wannabe” Golf Professional

What do golf and workplace safety have in common? More than you think. This lively session uses golf analogies to explore how mindset, preparation, and awareness drive safer outcomes. Attendees will learn how to “SWING for Greatness” by reducing interference, navigating hazards, and growing from wins and losses—transforming everyday safety performance into championship-level results.

Professionalism is more than a title—it is a commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and integrity. This session draws parallels between the discipline of professional golfers and the responsibilities of safety professionals. Through vivid examples and video demonstrations, participants will explore how preparation, awareness, emotional control, and consistent practice form the foundation for reliable outcomes. Just as golfers plan their shots, assess conditions, and rely on a team to succeed, safety professionals can apply the same mindset to hazard recognition, human factors, and collaborative culture. By focusing on the process rather than only the results, organizations can build a culture where safety, quality, and performance become natural byproducts of professional practice. Attendees will leave with insights into how daily behaviors, mindful preparation, and teamwork can transform safety from a compliance exercise into a pursuit of excellence that inspires others and creates lasting impact.

Attendees will learn:

  • Understand how golf principles—mindset, preparation, and focus—translate into workplace safety practices, equipping participants to recognize parallels and apply performance strategies that enhance organizational safety culture.
  • Apply the “Potential – Interference” performance formula to identify barriers such as awareness gaps, poor processes, and stalled growth, and learn practical methods to reduce these interferences in safety performance.
  • Implement the SWING for Greatness framework—Spirit, Work, Identify, Navigate, Grow—to build safer habits, strengthen hazard recognition, and transform both individual and team safety outcomes into championship-level performance.

Speaker: Dave Silva

David Silva is a retired Naval Officer turned safety consultant who brings a calm, mission-focused mindset to the world of risk and leadership. Drawing from nearly three decades in the Navy, he now helps organizations navigate complexity with the same discipline and clarity used to guide high-stakes operations at sea.

At SafeStart, David blends sharp analysis with a people-first approach—believing that strong relationships and shared awareness are the true foundations of a resilient safety culture. His work centers on helping leaders move beyond compliance and into meaningful, sustainable performance.

Now serving on the executive committee for the ASSP Hawaii Chapter, David is also a sought-after speaker known for making safety relatable, practical, and even a little fun.

Inspired by the Hawaiian value of kuleana (shared responsibility), David approaches safety as something we all own—together. When he’s not working with organizations, you’ll likely find him enjoying time with his wife and two sons or walking the golf course, chasing a better score and a good day outdoors.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting virtually.
