Topic Asbestos: Introduction to the EPA’s AHERA Standard and How it Applies to the Protection of People
Asbestos-containing building materials are present in many older structures, especially in the majority of Hawaii’s public schools. In this presentation, we will provide a background on the nature of asbestos, health risks, types of asbestos containing building materials (ACBMs), and the regulations that apply to schools and outside contractors that encounter and/or disturb (e.g. abate) ACBMs.
- What are the key issues that school custodians, maintenance workers and administrators should understand?
- What are school and local education agency responsibilities under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)?
- What additional regulations and work practices apply to renovation and demolition activities at schools?
Join us to learn how the people we protect through safety can prevent exposures to asbestos as learned through the lessons applied at schools.
